Resources for Faculty

In order to teach writing effectively, faculty need resources that support their endeavors to design writing-intensive courses and writing assignments, to respond to their students' written work, and to set standards for student writing that are informed by scholarship on Writing across the Curriculum.

You may also wish to consult the section on W-courses in order to read the guidelines for these courses or to propose a new W-course on-line.

If you would like to comment on the value of this web site or make suggestions about how it might be improved, please contact us at the address given below.

These pages offer resources to faculty who wish to design, propose, or revise a W-course.  While there is a wide range of W-courses offered at the University of Pittsburgh, we provide here a set of guidelines to help faculty ensure that their course meets W-course requirements established by the
College Writing Board.  We also suggest ways to conceive the goals and potential results of a W-course, which can offer students unique opportunities as learners.

Note that you may now submit a new or revised W-course proposal electronically with our W-course proposal form. Electronic submission relieves you of the obligation to make multiple copies and will enable the College Writing Board to respond more quickly to proposals.

You may also consult our list of W-courses offered both this semester and in the forthcoming term, along with our archive of models for W-courses based on syllabi at Pitt and other institutions.
